Galway City and surrounding area

We will be staying in Galway for 2 nights in June. We are thinking of driving to see Kylemore Abbey, Ashford Castle, and the town of Cong during the day. Has anyone eaten at either Kylemore Abbey or Ashford Castle? Has anyone done the medieval dinner at Dunguaire Castle in Kinvarra? Where have you stayed that was in or close to the town center that 3 adults[mom, dad, 22 yr old daughter] would like? Thanks for any suggestions.

I can't answer your questions about driving to the other locations, but I do recommend staying in Salthill. We stayed at a B&B along the water and it was an easy walk to the town center. We didn't have reservations (last week of April) so we just parked at the first B&B in a line of about five of them. We toured the first and second one and decided to stay at the second one because it was nicer. I remember that the first one had a room that was in two sections, each with a double or queen (don't remember) sized bed. If you want the name of the place we stayed you can PM me and I will look it up. There were a lot of B&B's in the area.

We went to the Medieval Banquet in Kinvarra and liked it very much.It was a nice place to spend the night. In Galway we stayed on College road which is a short walk into the downtown area.Very nice places along there. We drove to Galway but took a day long bus tour to the Connemara which was a break from driving and very nice.

Hi Carole,

I used to live in Galway and would like to recommend you visit 3 pubs. First the Quays (pronounced "keys") is an old church that's been converted into a pub. Beautiful inside.

econd, Taafes on High Street. Great place for trad.

I also recommend the Lisheen on Bridge Street. I spent many a night at the Lisheen.

Cheers!

Kylemore Abbey is a private school. You can visit the grounds and tour part of the main floor of the house, but that is all. There is a small snack bar there, but it's not someplace you would want to plan to have dinner.

Instead of driving to Ashford Castle, you might want to check into a cruise from Oughterard to Cong. I found this when I was looking for something I knew my father would really enjoy when we are there in September. http://www.corribcruises.com/index.htm
