we will be driving from dublin with a stop at the rock of cashal. we cannot decide whether to sleep that night in kilkenny or to sleep in kinsale. we know that if we sleep in kilkenny we will have less driving on the first day but more driving on the second day, by about an hour difference. However, if we drive to kinsale we will have more driving on the first day but less driving on the second day....so we cannot decide which town is a better choice...please help.
also, if you can, please recommend various stops along which ever route you recommend.
thank you
If the drive from Dublin will be day one in Ireland then stay in Kilkenny, otherwise
it makes little difference. Sort of a six of one-half dozen of the other.
You already received four responses to this question when you posted it three days ago (it's still there, scroll down). As I said then, Kinsale is too far on the first day. This is particularly true if you have never driven in Ireland before.
Michelle, as one of the other posters implied, driving in Ireland is pretty slow. Even when you use the motorway. My experience is that if you plan for about 30 miles an hour, you'll be pretty close. Wiki says Dublin to Kinsale is 175 miles, or about 6 hours of driving time.
I remember asking an innkeeper how long it would take to drive from Dingle to Killarney. His response, for me, 45 mintues, for you, about 90 minutes. Since that was my third trip driving in Ireland, I thought I'd be close to his 45 minutes. Wrong, it was just about 90 minutes.
What the heck, enjoy the scenery rather than rush to make some self imposed deadline. Slow down and take the time to enjoy the experience. Most Irish love to take time for a short, or not so short, chat. Along the way, ask shop keepers, waitresses, etc. what they think is worth seeing in the area. You might find some little know local treasure. Ditto restaurants, pubs, and shops.
I drove Dublin (well, actually Trim) to Kenmare in one long day with a stop at Cashel. Probably 6 hours of drive time.
