Free Wireless in England

My wife and I are traveling to England for the month of June. Our cell phone allows us to add a feature to our service for Wi-Fi calls. This is only an advantage, however, if we are not having to pay for minutes used at the point of service. In our hometown of Gainesville, there are several restaurants and cafes that have free Wi-Fi service. Is the same thing happening in England or are most of the Wi-Fi services pay-by-the-hour like Starbucks is? We will be traveling in York, Edinburgh, Llandudno, Chipping Campden, Cambridge, and London in case anyone has specifics about any of these cities.

Thanks for any information you have.

Cary, Check with your hotels to see if they offer free wifi to their guests.

FYI, I'm pretty sure that all UK Starbucks now offer free Wi Fi.

Hi Cary,
Where I live on the South coast, the local council (Bournemouth) has set up free Wi-fi on the high street. I don't know about any other councils doing this, but you could check their web sites.

I've noticed that a lot of public areas in the UK have free WiFi. Areas like parks or public squares. For example, in London the pedestrian promenade along the east bank of the Thames as free WiFi, that's sponsored the that area's business association.

Typically Starbucks offers 30 minutes for free with a voucher you request from the cashier. After 30 minutes you have to pay-but the rates are reasonable.

However, I think they've gone all free in the UK.
