I am going on a 3 wk tour of norway next month and would like to know average meal prices for breakfast, lunch and supper. I've read the guidebook and know I'll save money by doing picnics, so I've got my utensils and oatmeal-lid plate ready to go.
Bette
Bette,
It is difficult to give an average price for meals in Norway other than to say they are very expensive and if you want to have liquor with you meal even more so. Look for opportunities to share meals and be aware that Norway has a unique tax situation where "to go" meals are taxed quite a bit lower than if you eat in the restaurant. Even very nice restaurants have to go menus.
Some "street food" can be reasonably price also.
Just went last year and noticed they have everything - you can a fancy buffet for $50 or a hotdog for $5 and anything in between. The local shops have lots of deli and baked goods like we have for your picnics. Try some of their local chocolate bars too for dessert. Have a beer with the locals in a pub (since youre saving on lunch). They also have specials just about everyplace from locals joints to museum and city cafeteria style joints. Sit down places can get good deals - 20-30$ at a nice place, or under $20 for pizza/soda/beer! Have fun!
Hello Bette. Three weeks in NORWAY in May, that sounds wonderful ! I was in NORWAY in May of 2007. I really liked Norway ! The Norwegian people are mellow and friendly. In NORWAY all food is very very very high priced : in grocery stores, fast cooked food, restaurants, coffee cafes. Buy food in the lowest priced supermarkets. And bring some food with you from the U.S.A. And, in Oslo I recommend have one meal at Vegeta Vertshus (vegetarian buffet) located at Munkedamsveien 3B, south of Karl Johans Gate, near the Royal Palace grounds. The price is 25 Dollars (U.S.) for a large variety of good food, including Tofu. The dining room is small, so I recommend arrive there at about 2 p.m., to get a table. In Oslo 25 Dollars (U.S.) is a low price for a meal in a restaurant.
