Fly fishing in Scotland

My husband and I will be travelling to Scotland next year in late April. He wants to go fly fishing. There are alot of outfitters, any suggestions on a good one? Thanks

I can't recommend a particular outfitter, but do have some suggestions. First, did you find this site on fly fishing in Scotland? It looks to me like it would be worthwhile spending some time on it. Second, have you explored the VisitScotland site and requested the brochure on fishing in Scotland.? If you click on the link for Guides and Ghillies you will find not only a list of people, but also a list of accreditations and certifications. Third, I would highly recommend that you narrow down your choice to location that appeals and then post on TripAdvisor. Also, TripAdvisor has reviews of these outfits so check them as well. Fourth, there is a great book called The Return of John Macnab by Andrew Grieg, which is about three friends who revive the challenge of John Macnab to take (poach) a grouse, salmon and deer from three Royal Estates. Fourth, check out the movie Salmon Fishing in the Yemen. It can stir up the anticipation for the trip. Pam

My husband did a guided fly fishing day with James Coutts out of Spean Bridge (or maybe Roy Bridge) back in 2010. We found him in the fishing guide to Scotland from the British tourist office. Besides the day of guided fishing, James gave my husband passes to a couple of places he was able to fish on his own for the next few days. My husband found that he could go into different villages in fishing areas and get day passes to fish. He had a very successful day in Glen Lyon after visiting a fishing shop in Killin. Also he had good fishing in Kenmore and Dunkeld by asking around and getting day passes. We rented a house in Spean Bridge which is not much of a tourist town, but is centrally located for traveling in the Highlands. In Killin, we stayed at the Bridge of Lochay hotel which has fishing passes for the River Tay for guests. We went to Kenmore from there. Lots of good hikes for me to do wherever he fished. We had a great time.

We used www.huntingconsortium.com when we both hunted and fly fished in the Scottish Highlands near Inverness. They can put you onto any manner of estates for Atlantic salmon fishing if that's what your husband wants. We went in October primarily for the grouse but fishing is available year round. Mr. Kern and his staff are considered one of the best for worldwide outdoor adventures and we've actually used the flyrod on 200-pound yellowfin tuna off South Africa in past outings. The Hunting Consortium is first class organization we've used repeatedly.
