FLASH - landslides have closed both the West Coast Main Line and East Coast Main Line railway lines connecting Scotland and England. Network Rail acting to reopen both - no timescales given. One train blocked, none hit by the slides.
Lot of storm damage from the Midlands northwards. Floods, golf ball-sized hail and at least one tornado.
Wow. Glad that I decided to stay in the South this trip. I remember a few years ago when service from Inverness to Aberdeen was cut off due to flooding. You had to go back down to Perth and up again to Aberdeen. Pam
Up_date - East Coast line now open with a very limited service after removing 40 tonnes of debris. West Coast line still blocked. Some debris has been removed but there are continuing problems with overhead electrical systems and no time for reopening to traffic has been released. NEW - The line to Fort William has been broken by a massive landslide which derailed a freight train and carried the locomotive down a hill. The driver of the train had to be rescued by RAF search and rescue by helicopter. No estimate to clear that line and re-lay it has been released. Golf ball sized hail in the Midlands and North yesterday. Large flooding in the Northeast, specifically Newcastle-upon-Tyne. The station has been closed and has now been reopened. Long delays in travel to/from Scotland expected.
Thanks for posting this, Nigel. I'm planning to go to York for a daytrip from London in September and I think I'll be on an East Coast train (it's too early to buy tickets). Is there a website where I can monitor this and possible future "acts of God"?
Sarah, the National Rail website has delays and both planned and unplanned engineering works.
Thank you.
Update - both lines now reopened but with delays. No news about the line to Ft William.
