I'm guessing not, but I'll only have two full days in the country and I'm wondering if it is possible to do this. I won't have a car. If it isn't feasible, anyone have any suggestions for a daytrip outside the city?
The famous Norway in a Nutshell tour will do this for you. Instead of heading to Bergen after the cruise like most folks do, you also have the option of returning to Oslo same day: http://www.norwaynutshell.com Look for the "Round trip from Oslo via Voss" option. Advance reservations are essential as the train in/out of Oslo requires seat reservations. The entire trip will last 16 hours.
What Michael said. I rarely get reservations but they are a must for this trip. You can do it in one long day or stay a night in the middle and do it as two days. There are travel agents that know how to book Norway in a Nutshell for you. I'd probably go with them and let them work out the connections.
The reservations can easily be made at home via the http://www.norwaynutshell.com website using a credit card.
agreed-- "Norway in a Nutshell" is the way to go! It's a highly efficient way to see the stunning Fjord country. The system of train, bus, boat connections runs like clock-work; it's all made very easy and convenient for the traveler. If you have the time, you CAN spend a night or 2 in Bergen and then train it back to Oslo (as I did), but I know that many just do the trip in 1 day; and return to Oslo that same night. It's 1 of the great excursion trips of Europe (IMHO!; although I have yet to meet the person who did "Nutshell" and didn't love it!). I know I did. Enjoy it, Tom; it's pretty spectacular.
