first trip to UK, rail pass a good idea?

Hello everyone: this will be our first trip to UK (but not to Europe). I have a five-day conference in London, then we plan to go by rail to Edinburgh, down to York, return to London to fly home. We are both over 60. Good idea to buy a rail pass? We want to take the sleeper to Edinburgh. Thanks!

Others will chime in here, but I would not recommend using a rail pass. Instead, just buy fares in advance and you will have significant savings.

It might be worth your while to buy a Senior Railcard. Gets you 1/3rd off most walk up fares. In addition you can usually get a further 1/3rd off the discounted fares you can obtain by buying tickets in advance. http://www.senior-railcard.co.uk/

Unless you are going to be doing more rail travel than you list, I don't think BritRail passes would be a good idea. The one plus to the pass is the flexibility. If you know the dates you will be traveling, just buy the tickets in advance (they go on sell about 12 weeks prior to travel date) and the discounted tickets do tend to sell out quickly. The Senior Rail card is also a good deal for you.
