My friends and I are planning a trip to Ireland for our graduation trip and I'm wondering when the best time to fly is, and the best transportation in west Ireland (Shannon, Dingle, Killarney). We are not comfortable driving.
If you don't want to drive, you'll mostly be limited to bus in the west. The train system just isn't extensive out that way. Best time to fly? Do you mean time of year or time of week? Midweek flights are cheaper. Sign up with a few travel websites to get their fare newsletters and start watching the prices now. That way you'll learn what a "normal" price is, and will be better able to recognize a deal when you see one. As far as weather, crowds, etc., I love Ireland in the spring and fall, but I've been there as early as February and it was still nice (much warmer than I anticipated most days).
Weather seems to be the same year round to me... a little nicer in summer, a little colder in Winter in the West.
Bus for the west for sure. It's clean comfortable, and runs fairly often. Very few trains, mostly offering routes that only go back east.
Best time to fly - any time but late June through August, when it gets busy. May-June are beautiful, though, and have good prices.
PS - Driving wasn't as bad as I thought it was goign to be, but if you're under 25 you might run into difficulties renting.
Have a great trip!
Thank You all so much! I'm registered now for a ticket price watch and am looking into hostels, along the Patty wagon and off.
