We are going to spend three days in the Kilkenny area at the end of Oct. We hope to see the Rock of Cashel as well as the city of Kilkenny. Can anyone suggest a nice hotel for around $100 a night per room with bathroom and breakfast included or am I just dreaming? Therese
Is your heart set on a hotel? A B&B would seem to be your best option and would fit your budget. Will you have a car? We stayed at the Hillgrove B&B a few years back - it's a little outside of town but very comfortable and offers great breakfasts (we still dream about their porridge with Irish mist...). http://homepage.eircom.net/~hillgrove/
If it has to be a hotel, I can't be of any help. However, if you are willing to stay in a B&B (my preference), go to www.discoverireland.com. There you can find listings of the B&Bs in Kilkenny, along with contact information. Look for B&Bs with "en suite" rooms (that means it has its own bathroom).
My wife and I stayed at a B&B in Kilkenny out of Rick's book. It was very nice but a hike into town. I'd recommend staying closer in. We stayed two nights in Kilkenny but I wish we had only stayed one. Kilkenny (IMHO) can be seen in about 4 to 6 hours. Hitting only the better sites can get the city done in 4. If you are going to other sites, I'd recommend you stay in B&Bs near the site so you don't back track to a base. You mentioned the Rock of Cashell. That's a good 90 minute drive or so. You can stay there a night after Kilkenny. We rushed through the ROC to not be late getting to Kilkenny. I wish we had taken more time on the ROC and looked at the city of Cashell a bit.
Thank you so much for helping me sort out how best to approach our visit to Kilkenny and the Rock of Cashel[INVALID] as well as how to have money left to eat when we get there. There are so many B&Bs that sound wonderful. What a help to hear from people who been there. Therese
I just returned from Ireland about a month ago. I stayed at Carriglea B&B in Kilkenny. Big two story house, nice sized bedroom with private bath. And a lovely and filling breakfast. Very personable. Close walk to "downtown". It took me about 7-10 minutes to walk to Kilkenny castle and the restaurants. If I remember right, it was 45 euros/night.
My husband and I just retured from Ireland after 18 night trip. Fantastic trip! We stayed in Kilkenny one night and strongly recommend Rosquill B&B..very close to town but not sure you'd want to walk it. The only thing I thought worth seeing in the area was the castle which is right in the middle of the town. Nice town though. We arrived late evening, checked in at Rosquill, went to Langston's (too expensive for the food!), slept, had a wonderful breakfast, visited the castle and the market right outside the door, and headed to Cashel. The B&B was spotless, comfortable room, great food, and warm hosts. I think we paid 35 euro per person, en suite, cash.
agree with all b&b are good values and I think much better than hotel
You might try the Hibernia. We stayed there last year...It's an older hotel with lots of character and right in the center of town. The room rate included a full breakfast--We stayed there mid-week and I'm fairly certain that we paid about 100 or less-
Kilkenny is a nice town, but you can see all the sights, including the Rock of Cashel, in one day.
