I'm looking for tips on taking the ferry from either the Shetland Islands or Orkney Islands (Scotland) to southern Norway (either Bergen or Kristiansand). Has anyone done this? What was the ride like?
1. Are you sure the route exists? The only ferries I've noticed in either the Shetlands or Orkneys were from the mainland of Scotland. My usual ferry sources don't show anything either. 2. I've seen winter wave heights in the North Sea of fourty feet. The oil platforms are designed to withstand higher waves. I heard of an accurately measured rougue that hit eighty-five about ten years ago. I don't know if there's a corelation between 1 and 2. I've also made an uneventful summer Inverness to Stavanger crossing in a mid-sized sailboat.
Diana, I think Ed is right and there aren't any ferries from Orkney or the Shetlands to Norway. I think that there was at one point as I looked into it a few years ago for a trip and decided it was too complicated. If you check the websites for the ferries, it says that the service is no longer offered. ; ( Pam
Diana, I just checked, you can get to Bergen Norway via Flybe from the Shetlands. You can fly to the Shetlands from Kirkwall or take a ferry. It could be a great trip. Pam
