Has anyone done this? If so, is it an all-day affair? We will have 2 children under 7 in tow, and we only have 3 days to do this in. Thanks!
I've done the ferry to Holyhead, then train as far as Bangor. The ferry can be a bit rough, that'd be my only concern for the kids. Bring gravol. :) All of the connections are easy - it's more just the actual travel time. Check the ferry schedule, check the trains schedule, they should give you a good idea.
I dont understand- "all day" or "three days'. Need a better clarification of what your question is. What is the relevance of " 3 days' if you want to do this in 1 day?
Thanks. Sorry, should have clarified. We have 3 days to leave Dublin, go to Oxford, and go back to Dublin. From what I'm seeing via ferry/train schedules, it will be (basically) an entire day to get there and an entire day back, which gives us only 1 day in Oxford. Probably not worth it.
I suggest that you fly Ryanair from Dublin to London Luton and take a National Express coach (highway bus) from Luton to Oxford. For example, you could leave Dublin at 08:15 and arrive at Luton at 09:20. Leave Luton at 10:50 and arrive at Oxford at 12:45. On your return take a coach from Oxford to Luton, departing at 16:20 amd arriving at 18:35. Fly Ryanair to Dublin, departing at 20:25 and arriving at 21:35. That will give you one full day in Oxford plus major portions of the days on either side of the full day.
Why Oxford, out of curiousity? Northern Wales is gorgeous, with wonderful towns, people, and splendid castles. Some fun stuff for smaller children.
Oxford for 3 reasons: 1) my husband and I have been before and have wonderful memories there 2) my husband's a professor and needs to do a bit of research there (and only there) 3) my 7 year old daughter LOVES Harry Potter and Alice in Wonderland--both great places for such things.
FLY !!! That way you reduce your travel time significantly. Even my Irish friend dreaded the train/ferry from London to Dublin- much too much travel time
