Ferries in Norway

Hi all, We are traveling soon to Norway and have scheduled 4 days on the Sognefjord. We will have a rental car. Do we need to reserve car ferries ahead of time to get from Aurland to Balestrand, Balestrand to Solvorn, and the ferry again near Solvorn that we'll need to cross to begin our trek to Oslo? Thanks!

We did not make reservations for those ferries when we visited Norway. The crossings are quite short, the ferries just go back and forth, sort of like a moveable bridge. If you miss one, it's usually only half an hour until the next one.

Same experience, ferries are just part of driving in western Norway. Drove around fjord country and Jotunheim in July, and did fine with ferries, tunnels, one-lane roads, it's a little challenging, but all fun. Biggest problem driving fjord country is under-estimating time. We had read warnings about this beforehand, but still weren't fully prepared for just how a switchback-down-a-mountain-to-long a curve-around-an-inlet-to-a-crossing-by-ferry could turn a small distance on a map into a multi-hour drive. We were lucky, in July we had all of those extra hours of daylight to drive in. Always build in a lot of time into your driving and enjoy. Driving your own vehicle is the best way to see it. francis
