Is it necessary to book in advance for these ferries? We have a small car and 4 adults hoping to make this trip in mid-September. Thanks!

Just from standing looking at the ferries, it doesn't look like they ever get to capacity. What you better really, really check however, is if your rental agreement will let you do it. Having looked at it myself a bunch of times, I've never found any company that would let me take a car across the Irish Sea in either direction. But taking one across the channel (in either direction) is no problem, go figure.
