Can anyone recommend lodging in Edinburgh? We'll be there 3 night- just my husbandcand myself. We like B & Bs, as well as hotels. Is there a certain neighborhood we should aim for? Thanks!
I'm glad this question came up, I will be staying in Edinburgh next May.
Has anyone stayed at the Royal British Hotel??
We loved 23 Mayfield. The rooms are lovely, the host is delightful, and the breakfast is absolutely amazing. There is parking available, although we got around on foot and by bus the bus stop is only a few steps from the b&b. Check out the reviews on tripadvisor for more details.
We stayed at the Royal British several times, but it has been more than 5 years now since our last stay there. One big plus is its location- it is across Princes Street from Waverly train station and just a short walk from the park and the Royal Mile. I'd check TripAdvisor for recent reviews.
If you're looking for a good location, you can't beat the the Ibis right smack in the middle of the Royal Mile: http://tinyurl.com/bq22pv4
We loved Priestville Guest House, one of the recommendations in RS' book. The breakfast was excellent, and Colin (the owner) was superb with directions to various places. We spent just three nights last November, and can strongly recommend this place. It's not next door to the Royal Mile, but rather in a very quiet residential neighborhood. You can walk to the Royal Mile in about 20 minutes, or ride a bus that stops just a block from the B&B. Wherever you stay, enjoy your visit to Edinburgh, we loved the place.
I have stayed in a number of B&B's and a couple of hotels. My favorite hotel in the Inverleith. It's near the Royal Botanic Gardens, which I like as it takes you a bit out of the tourist crush. Bear in mind that nothing is far in Edinburgh! I usually would take the bus up to Prince's Street or The Royal Mile and often walked back down the hill in the PM. Pam
Thanks, everyone, for the help. I'll be sure to look-up all of your suggestions. Very excited to be heading over e this Saturday.
If you are looking for a basic clean room and a good "full Scottish breakfast" - I recommend Kenvie Guest House. It's relatively inexpensive. It's in the Dalkeith Road B&B neighborhood - priestfield is just down the street as mentioned in an earlier post. Easy bus connection to Royal Mile. Dorothy Vidler and her husband run the place and are very good at answering emails and giving you information. If you have bad knees, this is not the place for you. There are some steps to walk up.
Kingsway Guest House.
We, 2 college aged daughters, wife and I, stayed there this past June for five nights and loved it. They know the city and country and helped us tweak our plans. Breakfasts were wonderful, including one packaged lunch as we left before 7:00 one day. Close to bus stop, but we spent 15 minutes to walk the one mile to the Royal Mile. Quiet and clean. We hope to go back one day.
We stayed at the Albyn Townhouse Bed n' Breakfast last year and liked it very much. It's about a 15 minute pretty and safe walk through the park and University area to the Royal Mile etc. It has a small car park which tipped it for us. The rooms are very nice, the staff is wonderful, and the breakfasts great!
We stayed at Premier Inn on princes street for 25 pounds a night. It was super clean, modern, and our view was amazing. Here is a picture of our view:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v497/curseofanubis/view.jpg that bottom concrete ledge is where our window sits. I can't recommend it enough. especially for 50 US dollars.
I stayed at Kirklea Guest House. Walking distance to everywhere (though a good walk), private, great breakfasts, reasonable $, good people.
My daughter and I stayed at Elderfields Guest House. Very reasonable price, beautifully decorated, old Georgian house. Location was about a 10 min. walk to the Royal Mile, and was a nice, quiet residential neighborhood. The owner, Maureen was extremely helpful, as well as being warm and welcoming. Our bedroom looked out onto Arthurs Seat, which was so beautiful to see each morning. Looks like a double room is running 56-64 GBP per night. http://guest-houses-edinburgh.com/about_rooms.php
Heidi, I was going to make a suggestion, but I assume you're already in Edinburgh. For future reference, you could consider Hotel Ceildleh Donia. It's in a nice residential neighborhood and not far from town by Bus. Happy travels!
