Arriving by train to the central station. I've already discovered hotels are expensive in Copenhagen. We'll need to get two rooms. Is there anyone out there that stayed somewhere in Copenhagen that they thought was o.k. for the price? We are not picky. I've looked at Hotel Nebo, but am not sure about it's location right inside the red light district. We will only sleep there, so maybe it will work. CabInn even look o.k., but we'd like to stay near Tivoli and their rooms for 3 are sold out for June 2011 so we'd need to get 3 rooms with room for 2 each room. We don't even have 3 adults, so that would not work and it would be very expensive.
Try the Ascot Hotel. Have stayed there many times over the years. Only a few blocks from Tivoli, it is a good area next to the Circus building. Though it is next to a "gentlemen's club", don't let that deter you in any way. They have rooms and even small apartments that should meet your needs. Great breakfast buffet, too. Good luck.
In 2008, or family of 5 stayed at; * * * http://www.chickens.dk/ * * * They brought in a cot for our youngest (age 5) * * * The 400-year-old building has "gritty charm", but it was clean, comfortable and conveniently and safely located.
Hotel Astoria...it's a block from the train station and only a few blocks from Tivoli. We enjoyed our stay there.
I stayed the the Absalon Annex, which is attached to the Absalon Hotel, but the bathrooms are in the hallway. I had a single room, so I am not sure what they would have for 5 people. They have an amazing breakfast with meats. cheeses, breads, etc. This hotel is right near Hotel Nebo, which also looked nice (from the outside.) The location is great, as it is right near the train station, you are never far from whatever transportation you might need and I never felt unsafe.
When are you going? As Rick said, we were able to get good prices on reasonably nice Hotels in Copenhagen during July and August. We paid $125 per night for a small double including breakfast............................. We stayed at Hotel Phoenix first. It's a very nice hotel, one of the best breakfasts I've had anywhere. We didn't book there - we booked at Copenhagen Strand but it was full when we arrived and they sent us to the Phoenix.................................... We later stayed at the Hotel Opera at the same price. It shows its age more but is still very decent - and just around the corner from the metro....................... The hotels were all convenient to Nyhaven and Kongens Nytorv (the other end of the walk from Tivoli). It's about 15 minutes by metro to the airport and a better area than near the train station or Christianshavn.......................... We used the Copenhagen card which included all public transportation (plus many admissions) so hopping on/off the metro/train to get around was never a big deal. We didn't use a bus but they are included too.
