We are used to staying with each other (mom,dad,13,11,7 yr olds) in the same room - are hostels in the UK usually suited for this? Are there any hotels that would allow this (and have enough beds in a room of course)? What has been your experience in London, Dublin, and smaller places in the UK staying with a family of more than 2 + 2?
We were in Dublin last summer with a large group, my family of 4 and my sister's family of 7. It was surprisingly hard to find a hotel that would fit at least 4 that was under 200 euro. We ended up booking 2 3br/2ba townhomes. We stayed in Brookman Townhomes, they're a 10-minute bus ride from city center in a nice suburban area with shops. The townhomes were nice, bedrooms were tiny, but enough room for the 5 of you. They set you up with breakfast supplies (bread, jelly, milk, juice) and have a big book on the homes and lots of information on the area. They were running a special when we booked last year, we paid 120 euro/night, about the same you'd pay for staying in a hostel, and you get your own place with a kitchen and laundry facilities. I can get you the info if you send me a PM.
There are some Best Western Hotels in London that have rooms that can accomodate a family of 5.
I usually start by calling the hotel, tell them what my group is, how many nights and any other needs/preferences then let them suggest what they have to fill my need.
We have traveled with three kids many times and have ended up in pensions and hotels with one double room and a triple room, two-bedroom apartments, hostels (six-bed room to ourselves, two two-bed rooms and a single, a ten-bed room to ourselves and two three-bed rooms to ourselves) and probably something else I can't think of right now.
