Does anyone know the most economical way to stay in England with three kids 11 to 15 years old? All the websites seem to limit you to 2 children. We are considering a motorhome rental if all else fails.
I don't think a motorhome will work. For one thing, I'm not sure you'd find one in the UK- at least not like what you see in the US. Plus, you wouldn't be able to bring it into the cities, and probably not into the towns, maybe not into the villages- just closer- maybe. And gas (petrol) is VERY VERY VERY expensive - so I don't think you'd really save very much if anything. Check out renting apartments and university accomodations. The London School of Economics rents spare dorm rooms and apartments to tourists. www.lsevacations.co.uk/ and www.lsevacations.co.uk/. When we were taking our kids to London we used Citadines www.citadines.com/ both Citadines and LSE have multiple central locations in London. Outside the major cities you can check out b&bs. There are also family rooms at some UK budget chain hotels. Check out Premier Inns as a starter.
Definitely try apartment rentals. We have had some wonderful ones. Never so far had bad experience all over. Also you can save tons of money by cooking breakfast, making lunch there. It took quite a bit of work on my part but we have always been able to keep cost down to about $100.00 a night. Never in London, but in Paris, Edinburgh, Amsterdam, etc. Good luck, you can do it.
We had an apartment in London this summer that slept 5 for 600 pounds a week. There are many more out there. If you cook, you will save not only on the lodging but the food too. The only catch is there is usually a three day minimum stay. Alternatively look at hostels which often have reasonably priced family rooms. They may be bunk beds, but they will cost much less.
I highly recommend a home exchange. We have made eight very successful ones to England and Ireland, and it's definitely the best way to save money (we exchange cars too), AND it is wonderful to be in a home, with lots of room for family and kids, plus you can eat some meals in rather than all restaurants. Check homeexchange.com (the one we use) and homebase-holiday.com (cheaper to sign up for.) Email me if you have interest in this and need more info. Julia
Have you checked out the Cherry Court Hotel? They have family rooms and are very reasonable. They are right by Victoria Station so there is transportation close and lots of restaurants and shops. The whole hotel was renovated for the Olympics and Diamond Jubilee. Check it out on trip advisor and see what you think.
