Falmouth, England

During our upcoming trip to England, my wife will be taking a painting class in Falmouth for a good chunk of the day. I, without a painting bone in my body, will be cut loose with the rental car for a while. Any suggestions on things to do while my wife paints away? Sights / pubs / restaurants / activities? Thanks!

Gosh Roy, I hardly know where to begin so I'll just give you a list of my favourite sites. Tintagle and the Tintagel Post Office. Lands End. Port Isaac is fun especially if you are a Doc Martin fan. The Minack Theatre if fascinating. There is the Eden Project..lots of things to see and do there. I really like the Lost Gardens of Heligen. Try visiting a tin mine or St. Michaels Mount. Jamaica Inn is on Bodmin Moor but truly not worth it. Don't know what activities you are interested in but did you know there is surfing in Cornwall? You want cute little seaside villages? Mousehole is "precious", my favourite is Mevagissey...The Ship was our local when we were there. Please don't forget a proper cream tea with Cornish clotted cream. There is always a good pub.

The only other thing I can add is to drive over and through the moors. You wont see many other people, maybe some horse riders. And dont miss Lands End, it is quite a sight. One more vote for Mousehole, take you time and linger there. if you are in the mood, good place for a lobster lunch (although i am hooked on cornish pasties wherever I can find them)

Why not visit Falmouth itself? It's a pretty little town with a harbour and a maritime museum. You can visit Pendennis Castle, which is quite interesting, or get the boat across the Falmouth roads to St Mawes. They also used to run boat trips up to Truro as well. Or buy an ice cream and sit at the harbour, or buy fish & chips,o or get the train to Truro. If you're not in Cornwall very long, then take the time to drive to the north coast which is more rugged than the South, or else visit St Michael's Mount, or one of the various historic houses open to the public. Have fun! Cornwall is lovely.

Well, we're back from our trip so I thought I would provide a summary of what I did that day. First, I explored Falmouth itself and like Simon noted, it's a great town. According to the locals, it's experienced something of a rebirth over the past few years. Beautiful harbor and views, pedestrian-friendly, good restaurants. Upon departing Falmouth, I headed to St. Mchael's Mount, where I almost got sandlblasted by the strong winds...fortunately, it was low tide so I was able to make the walk out to the Mount. Very impressive. Then I drove west to Land's End - touristy but not enough to spoil the magnificent views. I stopped by Minack Theatre, which has to be the most beautiful setting on earth to see a performance. From there, I visited the Merry Maidens stone circle not far from our B&B before heading back to Falmouth. We had some great seafood at Rick Stein's before calling it a day. BTW, the next day on our way to the Cotswolds we first visited Mousehole - absolutely charming early in the morning - and then made the trek to Tintagel Castle, which was rugged and intriguing. We felt like Cornwall was one of the highlights of our trip and really wished we could have stayed longer.

Roy, I'm so glad you liked Cornwall! I missed the Minack my first trip and am so glad I saw it the second time. Thank you so much for reporting back to us.
