But can you stay 90 days in Eire right after 90 days in France or the U.K.?

That is correct. Ireland, France, and the UK all have separate immigration limits for US citizens. UK: 6 Months Ireland 90 Days France, as part of the Schengen Treaty, 90 Days in 180 days

Cyprus has separate rules, too. With a little planning, a person could stay in Europe indefinitely. Just move around at appropriate times, going to another country when the time limits are up. Every 6 months a Schengen country can be re-entered and the whole process started again. I'm trying to work out my schedule now. Winter in Spain or Italy, spring and summer in England and Ireland, fall in.....

Now that's what we're thinking. Well not indefinatly but a year would be nice.

I was going to add that you are free to request some amount of time or even the full 90 days, just have some type of response ready when they ask why. Nancy's experience is typical though, if they see a return ticket in 2 weeks, they may just give you 30 days, if you are pushing 30 days, they may bump it to 60 days, or other Immigration Officers may just always grant 90 Days. Re-Entry (ie: there a month, then leave, come back in a few weeks to stay longer...) may be a whole other issue.

Be aware as well that entry to Ireland and length of stay is at the discretion of immigration. They may very well just grant the 90 days, but if you show up with no itinerary or reservations, especially a return ticket, and they suspect you may be there to work, they may grant a lesser time period or deny you entry all together. My advice would be, have a return ticket and an itinerary.

That would explain why my previous three trips to Ireland (with return tickets in hand) had different lengths of admittance. One says 30 days, and two of them say 60.
