My brother and I are tentatively planning a trip to the Valdres area in Norway for 2012/13, and I'm trying to get an idea of how much it will cost, excluding airfare. We will definately rent a car to get to some out of the way, rural places where our family is from. The plan is, so far, to fly into Oslo, and travel north to Lillehammer by train, rent a car there, drive through the interior region, and then fly out of Bergen. When I travel in the rest of Europe I like to stay in small B+Bs or guesthouses, which is the least expensive option, so I'm looking for this type of accommodation in Norway. Any ideas on what to expect to spend on gas, food, lodging, etc., and/or tips on saving money would be appreciated. I am well aware that Norway is known to be extremely expensive, so I guess I'm asking: just how expensive is it?
We can handle just about anywhere (except Austria, Switzerland, and Scandanavia) in europe on two hundred bucks a day (which includes a car and gas). For Scandanavia we have to double it. Example: two small pizzas and two beers in Bergen was eighty bucks - - and we had to really poke around to find something that cheap. Cheaper than B&B's, but a bit hard to spot (and only out in the country) are 'camping' places. While it's mostly exactly what it sounds like, many have small cabins (super clean, linens, etc) that you can rent by the night at about a third what a budget hotel would cost. They generally have a sink in the little kitchen area, but the rest of the plumbing is in a central buidling which is also spotless.
