Euston Station

Plan 4 nights in Keswick. What is best public transport from London? I thought train but it doesn;t go to Keswick itself.Want to get an early start so should I stay near the station?

You can leave Euston at 05:39, connect in Oxenholme, and arrive in Windermere at 09:33, in time to catch the #555 bus to Keswick which departs from the train station at 10:07. Or you can leave Euston at 07:30, connect in Preston and Oxenholme, and arrive in Windermere at 10:44, in time to catch the 11:07 bus to Keswick. If you want to leave at 05:39, stay within walking distance of Euston. The Tube won't be running early enough for you. If you leave at 07:30, you can stay anywhere in central London and take the Tube to Euston. When are you taking this trip? If you book well in advance (as of today up to 22 June) on the East Coast site, you can get a discount fare as low as £16.50 for the 05:39 train. There are no discount fares for the 07:30 train. You'll pay £92.10.

Clarification: staying 3 nights in Keswick and have difficulty with various routes and rail lines. Many years ago there was just Brit Rail but this seems to have changed. I have to be at Heathrow to leave for Rome on June 28 at 8 a.m. Am staying near Victoria Station. What is East Coast? A ticket agency? I dont' see a 5:40 am. train. Also as a senior citizen can I get a rail card for reduced fare? If so, should I do it before I leave on June 19? I seem to spend all the time travelling. Didn;t realize that Keswick and Lake District was so far from London. Help!

If you're staying in Keswick three nights and then one night in London before flying to Rome on 28 June, that means you want to go from London to Keswick on 24 June (a Sunday). The 05:39 train to Oxenholme Lake District only runs on weekdays. On Sundays the first train you can take from London to Oxenholme Lake District where you will transfer to a train to Windermere departs London Euston at 08:45. You will arrive in Windermere at 12:48. You will travel on a Virgin Trains train from London to Oxenholme and on a TransPennine Express train from Oxenholme to Windermere. East Coast is one of the train companies operating under the National Rail umbrella. All train companies sell tickets for each others' trains, but East Coast offers discount fares for advance booking. As of a moment ago, I found a discount fare of £69.00. Even though you would get a reduced fare if you buy a Senior Card, I think you'll do better by booking discount fares in advance. Do it ASAP. On Sundays there is a bus that leaves the Windermere Rail Station at 12:52 and arrives in Keswick at 13:57. The next bus departs at 13:52 and arrives at 14:57. Does your flight to Rome depart at 08:00 or do you want to be at Heathrow by 08:00? If your flight leaves at 08:00, you should be at Heathrow no later than 06:00. The Tube won't be running early enough for you. A private car service will be cheaper than a taxi. Many people recommend Just Airports. There is a discount for paying cash. Victoria Station is in postal code SW1. The cash fare for a saloon (sedan) from anywhere in SW1 to Heathrow is £26.00.

Thanks to all. I leave London for Keswick on Sunday, June 24 for 3 nights, then back to London for one night where I thought to leave my luggage, probably a 24" carry on needed for 3 weeks in Italy. Taking very little to Keswick. On June 28 my plane for Rome leaves Heathrow at 7:10 a.m. Does it make any sense on the return to return later in the day from Keswick and travel directly from Keswick to Heathrow for an overnight near or in the airport.? That would mean I would take my stuff with me to Keswick but I won;t have much luggage so it won't be a problem. In the meantime I will book the train from London to Keswick as you have suggested, Tim. Thanks again!

Since your flight from Heathrow to Rome leaves so early, I think it would be a good idea for you to spend the night in a hotel near the airport. FYI, a 24" bag is too big to qualify as a carry on.

Thanks, Tim, I do have a 20 " not 24" so am ok for carryon. Have had some issues at home so am booking now for Keswick. I cannot change the Sunday travel date at this point, so I'll hope I get to the Lake District. Will try East Coast. Thanks again.
