Via the internet and as early as possible.

You can easily make the reservations online. Eurostar pricing works similar to airfares. Lots of different price options depending on when you book and what the demand is. So the earlier you book the better price you can get.

You need to book 90 days out for the best fares. Also, as said above, the time you leave and to an extent the day you travel makes a difference, so check fares for the whole day/week. I just checked 90 days out from today and founds fares from £56.00 to £112.00, depending on time of day.

While 90 days ahead is the maximum for booking tickets on many national rail sites, at eurostar.com it is 120 days.

We took Eurostar from Brussels to London and back again 10 days later (our trip originated in Amsterdam). I wouldn't spend any extra money on First or Business Class on Eurostar. Standard Class is plenty comfortable, with ample room at the end of the car for your suitcase. The cafe car is usually 2 or 3 cars forward of you (depending on which car you're in of course), and they have a large menu of items to choose from, for sale in both Pounds and Euros. I had a Croissant which cost €1.90 but was very delicious, and as we'd just emerged from the Channel Tunnel and were now in France, I thought it was appropriate to toast the French countryside with a delicious Croissant! Marvelous train, look forward to taking it again. We sat facing backwards on both trips, which was OK as the scenery goes by so fast you really don't look outside all that much anyway! Transiting the tunnel takes 20 minutes and your ears do not pop at all (though mine did in some smaller tunnels while rocketing across southern England before entering the Channel Tunnel).

Thanks for all this great information. Do I need to purchase the ticket in advance or can I do it on the day I want to leave? I am not sure of the actual day of departure, i wanted to keep it loose.

You can purchase tickets on the day of your journey, but you will be paying the highest price. To save money purchase tickets in advance....flexibility is possible but it will cost you more.

frank If you wait until the day and pay top dollar for on-the-day tickets you may find that flying with a cheap airline, even at the last minute, may be competitive. Generally, with a decent advance purchase Eurostar ticket, Eurostar is much more convenient and less expensive. As a previous poster has so accurately said, flexibility on the Eurostar costs.

I understand your desire to be flexible about your departure date, but flexibility comes with a price. I just checked the fares available for tomorrow, 27 September. For all except two departure times the cheapest fare is $233.00. If you can commit to a specific departure date and time and book far enough in advance, you can get a senior fare as low as $41.50.

The first time we took the Eurostar (from Waterloo station) we took 1st class and had a wonderful meal going and coming from Paris. It was a different ticket fee structure then. Now, since you're leaving from London, there are many food shops at St. Pancras station. Last year we got olives, salads, sweets and a bottle of wine to enjoy on the train. It is a wonderful train and to be speeding along in the dark and all of a sudden pop out in France is an amazing experience!
