England to Ireland...Best way

Hi its me again, so new question. We are going to travel to England in April, we would like to go to Ireland for about 3 days, what is the best mode of travel to get there, flying or ferry. Thanks for all the Helpful advice.

It would depend on where you are in England. Are your prior travels going to take you to the Welsh coast (convenient to the ferry) or are you going to be in London (convenient to heathrow or gatwick). Is "best way" for you cheapest- ie train or bus from London to Welsh coast even if it takes all day, or quickest (fly even if more expensive).

We flew from Bristol to Cork and then to Cardiff. We spent 4 days in the Cork area; 2 nights in Kinsale with a day trip to Clonakilty, a night in Cashel and then the last night in Cork.

OK, Brigitte, a couple of questions back at you, for clarification. What do you mean by best - fastest, funnest, cheapest, not-flyingest? For just 3 days I bet flying may be best. Are you going to the South or Northern Ireland?

At this time we were thinking of doing a sort of round about, flying into London going up through England to Scotland, crossing over to Ireland, back down Ireland to either Dublin or Rosslare and back to London. Approximately how long on a ferry does it take to cross to Ireland from say Stranraer To Larne, or if its easier Holyhead to Dublin?

"Approximately how long on a ferry does it take to cross to Ireland from say Stranraer To Larne...." 2 hours. "....or if its easier Holyhead to Dublin?" There is a fast ferry taking a little more than 1.5 hours from Dublin or Dun Laoghaire.

I've taken the ferry from Southern Wales to Waterford and from near Dublin to Northern Wales. I'd recommend the latter because, for a short stay, you probably don't want to start in Waterford.

Brigitte, With only three days to spend in Ireland, my suggestion would be to travel by air. This would reduce your travel times somewhat, and allow more "quality touring" time in Ireland. As you'll be in Scotland, one possibility would be either RyanAir or Aer Lingus from Edinburgh (I didn't check on flights from Glasgow). I hesitate to suggest RyanAir but be sure you pack light! Happy travels!

We flew AerLingus to Shannon, and they were great. Incredibly low fares, very tolerant of luggage weight and dimensions, extremely comfortable seating. Keep in mind that we visited in April 2009, and the economy was such that they were happy to have ANYBODY on their flights. My advice if using the Ryan or AL is to book early to secure best fares. Enjoy your trip... and enjoy the planning, too.
