England and Scotland

I'm taking a 2 week trip to England and Scotland during August, want to take my time and drive the countryside when not in Edinburgh and London. What's the best starting point? The fringe and Military Tattoo festivals will be going on in Edinburgh so probably won't want to spend more than 3 or 4 days there. And what are the best stopping points for the nights? Bath, York...?

In England, a good stopping point is York. There I liked the B & B 23 St. Mary's. Read about it in Rick Steves' travel guide book on England or Great Britain.
