My mom and I are planning our first trip to Europe this summer. We want to spend a week or so in England and Ireland before going to visit friends in Scotland. Does anyone have suggestions on where we should go or how to get around?
Steve has given you some of the options. Where in Scotland are you going? You could fly into London, fly to Dublin then ferry to Scotland... you begin to see the possibilities?
Do you mean 1 week each - or 1 week total? It really makes a difference in what we'd recommend. If just one week total- Pick ONE. Personally, I'd say London 3 days- train to York, train to Edinburgh. But Ireland would work well also.
Your interests make a difference too. Give us more info and we'll take that into account when we make suggesstions.
I'm going to go with the assumption that it is a week total before you get to Scotland. In that case, I would stick to England. Try this:
Day 1- Fly to London
Day 2- London (really a wasted day due to jet lag, time change, etc.)
Day 3- London, do British Museum, Changing of the Guard, Westminster Abbey, and Whitehall area.
Day 4- Side trip to Avebury, Cambridge, Oxford, whatever fits your fancy. This can be done on your own or with a small "van tour." If this is your first time, I would go with the tour.
Day 5- London, morning train to Windsor, see the castle (which is literally across the road from the train station), then afternoon back in London for any remaining sights that you would like to see.
Day 6- Train to York
Day 7- York in AM, then train to Edinburgh.
I am assuming that your friends are in Edinburgh- however, if not, then the above could change. PM me for more info.
