england - 3 night trip ideas

I am in London and would like to do a train trip for 3-4 days someplace in England(have already been to Scotland). Any suggestions?

I would love to see some of the Cotswolds but have no interest in renting a car and think 3 days may be too long there. Thanks in advance for your ideas.

I think 3 days is perfect for the Cotswolds, especially if you like hiking/biking. If you base yourself in Stow-on-the-Wold or Moreton-in-Marsh you will have lots of public transportion options. There are several bus lines that run throughout the Cotswolds-I've never needed a car.

You could spend a day seeing Stratford upon Avon and see a play at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre (if you like Shakes.) or visit Warwick Castle which is nearby. Trains run from London to Moreton-in-Marsh and National Express runs buses to Cheltenham Spa for as little as £4 each way.

York is another great mini-break. Make sure you visit Castle Howard - it's beautiful. If you book far enough in advance you can get train fares from London for £10.

You and easily do the Cotswolds from Stratford- there are local tour companies that do day and 1/2 day trips out of Stratford. Lots to do in the town also-- a butterfly preserve/garden, lots of walks along the river, etc. But I would suggest that you consider Cardiff Wales. It has lots of diverse shopping areas (old victorian arcades, funky markets, etc.) a nice docks/warf area that has been "improved" and is really special and great resturants. Good parks and gardens, etc. Cardiff castle is cool too. You can get there by train in about 1 1/2 hours from London out of Paddington. It is one of my favorite cities.
