Edinburgh to ? to Holyhead

I will be taking the ferry out of Holyhead to Dublin. I need a good town to stay at the night before the ferry ride. I'll be comming out of Edinburgh by train. I would like to stay in York or Conwy, but it looks like it might be difficult to get to Holyhead on the train from these two places. Any recommendations? Is Holyhead, Manchester or Chester worth a night stop? I'm grateful for your help. Sheri

If I had to spend the night, it'd be Conwy over either Manchester or Chester in a heartbeat. I wouldn't spend the night in Holyhead since it's pretty grim for anything to do, sleep, or eat. I don't know about York (and it's pretty far away), but there's all kinds of trains from Conwy out to Holyhead that take about an hour and would get you there in time to catch the ferries. Leave one 'L' out of the way you spell Holyhead and you might have more luck if you're googling around.

I went from the opposite direction... Dublin to Holyhead, to Bangor, to Chester, to Carlisle, to Edinburgh. Conwy shouldn't actually be that bad, it's not far off , although I have no idea regarding rail connections from there. Bit of a long train trip, though, giving up most of a day to do it, and making a transfer or two. I only stopped briefly in Chester, didn't love it. Did love Northern Wales and Bangor/Conwy/Beaumaris, etc.

Thank you for the help. I had a feeling Chester wasn't a great option. I can't seem to find a good place to stop inbetween Edinburgh & Holyhead to shorten the all day train ride. I'll look into Conwy a little further and keep hoping for another idea. Thanks again!

If you want a bit of a splurge not too far from Holyhead, check out Bodysgallen Hall, Llandudno, Wales. We stayed there several years ago - it was lovely.
