My husband and I are going to Britain next month. During part of our trip, we plan to visit friends of the family in Manchester. We'll be leaving from Edinburgh to get there, but as I'm looking at the BritRail website, there don't seem to be any direct lines between the two cities. What's my best bet for getting there with the fewest possible changes?

I hope you have a great time in the UK. While living over here I have used www.nationalrail.co.uk with good success.
Just playing around with the site I did a hypothetical Edinburgh to Manchester train search on June 7th. It came back with a direct line with Transpennine Express from Edinburgh @ 1552 getting into Manchester Picadilly at 1920. Advance Tix were available for 15 pounds.
If this does not meet your requirements I imagine you can catch any number of trains from Edinburgh to either York or Leeds with transfers then to Manchester.
If you use the Journey Planner at www.nationalrail.co.uk, you'll find that there is one direct route and several routes that require only one change.
