Any suggestions on how to get from Edinburgh to Liverpool using public transportation? We'd like to leave Edinburgh on a Sunday towards late afternoon to maximize our sightseeing time in Edinburgh, but are hesitant to leave too late so as to not to be able to enjoy seeing the countryside.

Take the train. Leave Edinburgh Waverley at 14:51, connect at Wigan North Western, and arrive at Liverpool Lime Street at 18:24. Or for daylight all the way, leave at 12:51 and arrive at 16:24. Or if more time in Edinburgh is more important than traveling during daylight hours, leave at 16:51 and arrive at 20:24.
