As I put my next European trip together, I want to ask people their opinion on this temp plan.
Morning train from Edinburgh to Liverpool (about 4 hours), take the Magical Mystery Tour (I know, it's tacky but I'm a Beatles fan), have dinner in Liverpool and catch a 9 PM Ryanair flight to Dublin. (Getting in about 10:30 PM.) Bus to hotel. Too much? I've left plenty of "just in case" time.

Assume you'll be leaving Edinburgh reasonably early, and that you'll notify your Dublin hotel by e-mail that you'll be a late arrival and that you'll request their return e-mail acknowledging that fact, and that you'll bring a copy of their acknowledgment with you (just in case). And you're hereby granted dispensation for taking the Magical Mystery Tour--Rick recommends it, in fact. Did you know about the special Beatles tours from Phil Hughes or Jackie Spencer?
