Edinburgh, Real Mary King's Close

Has anyone visited this exhibit in Edinburgh? As one of the few places open past 6pm during my short time in Scotland, I was considering it, but I've read mixed reviews online. I'm interested in hearing from anyone on these boards who has been there. I am more interested in the history aspect of it than a "ghost story."

My nephew did the tour of Mary King's Close when he was studying in the UK last year. He enjoyed it.

I took the tour in Sept 2006 - it covered a lot of history , went indepth regarding the plague , you really got a sense of what life must have been like living in the close .

There is a certain ghostyness ( not really a word ) about the tour however I am a history buff and thoroughly enjoyed it .

Took the tour and enjoyed it very much. I do remember one or two silly ghost things, but overall, it was interesting and educational. It was a unique tour and found it worthwhile.

We went on this last October. It was excellent. Our guide was a local author. Wife states he was very cute. Very informative about history of Edinburgh.

Hi Matt,

I took the tour last year and enjoyed it. The ghost business is played up some, but there was also the history included. A group picture was taken at the end and you have opportunity to buy a copy upon leaving. If you want to avoid the impulse buy, here's your FYI .

Bit more advice .. bring a small flashlight. The floor was definitely uneven. Cheers.

I took the tour in 2005 and enjoyed the history part of it as I'm not into "ghosts". Yes, it was worth it.

Matt,

It depends on what time of the year you go. We went last October before Halloween and it was being presented as more spooky/scary,but for the rest of the year its more traditional. They still had a lot of interesting historical facts. The people taking you through the close were dressed in character and never broke once.

It'w worth the visit!

Matt, my son and i took this tour in July. we liked it very much. lots of history, not much ghost story.

btw, there are numerous tours each evening besides mary kings close. we also took the "city of the dead" night tour of one of the local cemeteries which was very eerie. i recommend it too.
