Edinburgh - Old Town vs. New Town?

We'll be in Edinburgh in August and are prepared to splurge for a hotel in the City Centre. Would you recommend that we stay in Old Town or New Town? We want to be in a nice, comfortable neighborhood that is walking distance to sightseeing, restaurants, and nightlife. Is that asking too much? :-)

We really like the Royal British. It is across Princes street from the Waverley Train Station and just a short walk from the Royal mile. There is good shopping up and down Princes St. The hotel serves a very good breakfast. Some of the rooms have recently been renovated- ask for one of those. The problem may be that August is Festival. And this year is Homecoming. You may have trouble finding rooms.

If i were going to splurge it would be for the George in New Town. The George is one of the hotels that has been around for so many years. My parents actually honeymooned at the George! You really can walk to any place. It's up hill to Old Town, but there are lots of buses if you're tired. It's really is quite a compact town. Pam

Just stayed 5 nights in Edinburgh at the Chester Residences at 9 Chester St. These were great apartments in the West End. Go on Trip Advisor and you can read reviews. It was the best place, Home away from Home.
