My wife and I will be spending 3 nights in Edinburgh in early Jan. 2014. We have narrowed our hotel choices to the Balmoral Hotel and the Scotsman Hotel. Has anyone stayed in one or both? What were your impressions?

I have not stayed at either of them, but a friend of mine did stay at The Scotsman and enjoyed it very much. It's in the building that the Scotsman newspaper was originally in. Of course, The Balmoral, is one of the classic old hotels of Edinburgh. I've eaten lunch there in the bar. And this is where Jeremy and Captain Slow of Top Gear fame meet after racing a car and a steam engine up from London. (Poor Hammond was still off riding his motorcycle in the Borders and totally out of the running.) Captain Slow won and Jeremy was covered in coal dust.
