This question is for anyone who has stayed in the Dalkeith Rd neighborhood that Rick recommends. If one wanted to walk to the Royal Mile, would the walk be safe? Is it hilly? Is it actually only a mile? Are there sidewalks? A busy road? We're not against riding the bus, just wondering about the options.

The walk is safe and there is a sidewalk. We saw many students walking to school which is apparently between Dalkeith Rd. and the Royal Mile. The road is very busy. It is about a 15-20 Minute bus ride at least. Long walk. Not very hilly. We rode the bus but walking is possible. Several Rich Steves pubs in the neighborhood.

It's absolutely safe. I stayed in this area several years ago and as single woman was perfectly comfortable.
