My mom, my sister and I are traveling to Edinburgh by train. I have lost the ediburgh section of my ripped up book. Is the train staion close to the castle? Suggestions to stay for a lower price place with character
Waverley Station is in the heart of Endinburgh. You come up of the station and Prince's Street Gardens are in front of you Prince's Street and New Town is on your right and the Royal Mile and the Castle are up the hill to our left.
For accommodations I've stayed at the Inverleith Hotel, but I would not call it budget. It's not luxury and I've liked it a lot. Search the help line. There have been some recent posts about people who have stayed in recently in Edinburgh.

In June, my husband and I stayed in the Priestville Guest House, which is off of Dalkeith Rd. You have to take the bus to get to the Royal Mile, but it only takes about 10 or 15 minutes. I think they charge about 30-35 pounds per person per night, which is pretty reasonable for a big city like Edinburgh. We really loved it - it was very homey and Colin and Trina made us feel very welcome and were incredibly helpful. The breakfast was pretty great as well. Their website is www.priestville.com.
Across the street from the station and the shopping center that is over it, is the Royal British Hotel- not LOW budget- but reasonable. Very centrally located, with good views out the front rooms. Just a nice walk up to the Royal Mile and the castle and Holyrood House. Enjoy!
Thanks everyone
When we were in Edinburgh, we stayed at Numberfive self catering. See: http://www.hotfroguk.co.uk/Companies/Numberfive
It is out of Edinburgh proper, in a town called Portobello, but it is on the bus line. The stop is right outside the door. They have free parking, behind a gated fence. Park your car and take the bus into town - a 20 minute ride for 2.30L round trip back then. It is self catering, so you can cook your own food. They have insuite or down the hall, your choice. Obviously, down the hall is cheaper. The maid comes every day to clean and straighten. We really enjoyed the stay there and will stay there again if we return to Edinburgh.
Hi,
I enjoyed a week at the Dene Guest House, http://www.deneguesthouse.com/, this past April. It is in Edinburgh's New Town, so closer than Portobello, though not self-catering if that aspect interests you.
When you come out of Waverley train station, the #36 bus stops on that bridge and goes right to the corner by the Dene in one direction and stops directly across from the Dene's front door when going towards the train station.
The bus ride from the Dene to the castle was 10-15 minutes, I think. The castle does not open until 9:30. You have plenty of time to enjoy a hearty breakfast before traveling over.
In answer to the relation of the train station to the castle, head up :-) You walk up out of the train station and go uphill to get to the Royal Mile and then up to the castle at the end of it. A lot of up hills and down in Edinburgh. Very good exercise that week!
Cheers.
We are staying at the British Royal Hotel right now...It's across the street from the train station and in the middle of everything...It's worth the extra few pounds to stay so centrally located..We got a room here for 85 pounds a night...Saves a lot because everything is within walking distance...We used our Eurail pass to get to Edinburgh from London, first class all the way...The best train we have been on yet...
Enjoy,
A lot of people recommended the Priestville B&B and so did the consultant we spoke with at Rick Steve's Store. I contacted them about 2 - 2 1/2 months in advance to book and they were full on the days we were looking for (Oct 23-25)! So depending on when you are going check with them ASAP! Colin was really nice though and forward my email to another B&B that had availibility. We are now staying at 23 Mayfield and its about 35 GBP per person.
Hope this helps!
