Edinburgh before RS England trip

We will be flying into Edinburgh and touring there a few days before our Rick Steves England trip in July. Flight connects through Heathrow with only one and a half hours connection time. Will we need more time there in order to go through customs or passport control? or will that not happen until Edinburgh?

We are considering after a couple of days in Edinburgh, driving to St. Andrews and a bit of highlands before training or flying down to London area where we will do another day of car touring (Cambridge, Stonehenge, Stratford, we hope) before meeting the group at its beginning point in Bath. Considering staying in Cambridge or Oxford rather than London. Can't do it after the tour (thus we know we will miss Edinburgh festivals and Tattoo) Any advice on better itinerary or places not to miss?

1½ hrs at LHR should be okay, you'll go through a passport check or two but that doesn't take long. EDI is quite small and doesn't take long to get through customs.
If you rent a car in Scotland you might as well keep it to visit the places in the English countryside. It's just a little over five hours from Edinburgh to Stratford, or six to Cambridge. I think Rick's tour ends in London, so no need to go there en route to Bath.

If you can tour Cambridge, Stonehenge and Stratford-upon-Avon (we hope) in one day you're a considerably faster driver than me - and I'm no slouch.

Will you actually get out of the car or just drive by? Just the driving alone, no stops for food, toilet, or sightseeing, will take between 7 and 8 hours from Cambridge to Stonehenge to Stratford-upon-Avon and back to Cambridge.

Make sure and have a couple extra days at the end for London. I did the RS England tour last year and was so glad I had more time in London.
