Edinburgh B&B Dilemma

Rick's Guidebook gives so many good choices (it seems)about where to stay in Edinburgh, I'm wondering what your choice would be...and why. I'll be there in mid-September. Thanks!
(Oh, and Glascow too.)

Jan, there are lots of choices. I've stayed in several. The first time was at Beechcroft House in Murrayfield which is pretty far afield. More recently I've stayed at a small hotel, Inverlieth. I like it because it is near the Botanic Gardens and so away from all of the tourist crush. I've also stayed on Dalkeith Road, which was quite convenient. I stayed in Morningside which was less convenient. Lastly, I stayed behind Calton Hill which was convenient, but not as nice as Dalkeith.

In Glasgow I've stayed in the city centre and in the west end. There seemed to be more to see in the evening in the West End. The city centre was better for connecting with trains and the airport.

Thanks, Pam! This info is great...really helpful.
Where did you stay on Dalkeith? There are number of B&Bs there.

We booked Amaraqua in the Dalkeith Road area because it was highly recommended and also appears to be near Arthur's Seat which we want to climb. I am glad to hear, Pam, that you found the area convenient.

I've been trying to remember the name of the place where I stayed. I actually picked up a dreadful cold on the way over that year and so some of my memories are of searches for cold medication. I did find some really good blackberry flavored Halls cough drops! I think I got a deal at The Salisbury. I liked the area because there was a direct bus to the Royal Mile or Prince's Street, but it wasn't so far that you couldn't walk it in a pinch. Pam

Hi Jan, The last two times in Edinburgh we stayed at Airdenair in a cute room at the top of the house with a view of Arthurs Seat. Jill and Doug were great hosts. It is not far to the bus line and there is a laundromat nearby. email [email protected]

Hi Jan, I really enjoyed staying at the "Dunedin Guest House" in Edinburgh Large comfortable rooms, wonderful breakfast. There is a convient bus stop for transport into town. Some people walked into town but too far for me. The Jury's Inn in town - room was fine but nothing special, the price is right. Location is convient, quiet (even during the Tattoo/street fair madness) and 100 meters off the Royal Mile which is where you play. In Glasgow I stayed at the "Old Schoolhouse B&B". Mistake, I wouldn't stay there again even if were free. Nuf said! Wow, Edinburgh, fun.

We just spent two nights at the Holiday Inn Express at 300 Cowgate in Edinburgh. No, it's not a quaint charming B&B, but it did include an extensive breakfast with juice, croissants, tea, a cappuccino coffee maker, & cold cereal. The location was ideal: 3 blocks from Waverley train station, and just one block off the Royal Mile, halfway between the Castle and the Parliament (make sure you go in and visit the new Parliament debate chambers). Our favorite vegetarian restaurant was just a half block away: David Bann. And Edinburgh's best Indian tapas restaurant, Mother India on Infirmary, was only two blocks away.

Thanks to you all! I checked out the B&Bs and found them lovely...although Dunedin was already booked. The Priestville Guest House was considerably less than the others (which is a concern on a fixed income)and there's a discount when you invoke Rick's name. I'm hoping that it will do. Thanks again!

We have stayed at the Dorstan House and Ard Na Said B & B which appear to be on the same street as the Preistville House. They were both fine. Location for bus routes is good. Nearby pubs and shopping center. Could walk to them but car is better.

Edinburgh is blessed with lots of good self catering holiday lets. So for great value and whatever level of luxury you want, you can find real homes availbale for just a few days. I love this option when travelling - you have so much more freedon than stying iona B&B than in a hotel and Edinburgh has more than most places.
