Edinburgh at New Years-tips on accommodations and anything else?!

I am looking for accommodations in Edinburgh for New Years. I realize it gets very busy and prices go up at that time of year, so hoping for any tips on B and B's or memorable accommodations that are not overwhelmingly pricey! Any other tips for Edinburgh at that time of year would be most welcome...restaurants, events, etc. Thanks!

We were in Edinburgh in October and stayed at the Hotel MacDonald located near Holyrood Palace. Not an ideal location due to having to walk uphill quite a bit. However, the hotel is very nice, has a pool, and the staff is wonderful. They do a great breakfast and dinner was very good as well. We loved touring the Royal Yacht-well, actually may as well call it a ship. The Witchery is good for lunch-pricey for dinner. It most likely will be too cold to visit the Botanical Garden. Also very interesting is the museum dedicated to the history of Scotland and it is free. Enjoy your visit!

If you are looking to book for this year, you may be hard pressed to find anything- get busy NOW. We usually stay at the Royal British Hotel. It is across Princes street from Waverly train station. Very easy, short walk to the park and the Royal Mile. Not necessarily anything special, but reasonable and easy to get around from. I've read some accounts of the celebrations- take WARM layers and plan to party all night and a good part of the next day, if you wish. It is supposed to be spectacular.

We stayed here a couple of years ago. Really cheap and great accommodations. The bus stop is right in front of the house. It is about a 15-20 minute ride into town, but the price makes it do-able. http://www.numberfive.com/

I agree if you're looking for this year, you'd better start calling. ; ) I have stayed at the Inverleith Hotel. It's near the Royal Botanic Gardens. It has a walk up the hill to New Town and so is an easy walk back. I usually take the bus up to the events and then walked back. I liked it because it's a small family run hotel. Most recently I stayed at The Walton, which is a B&B a bit further up the hill and so no need at all for the bus to Princes Street. What fun to be going to Hogmanay. I hope that you've found this web site. http://www.edinburghshogmanay.com/ You'll also want to learn all the verses to Auld Lang Syne, so check out the page on Rampant Scotland. http://www.rampantscotland.com/songs/blsongs_syne.htm Pam
