My wife and I are looking for a clean and convenient place to stay while in Edinburgh. We will be there for two nights this June. Any ideas?
We have enjoyed staing at the Royal British Hotel. It is across Princes St. from Waverly train station. Very nice, and very convient for the Royal Mile, etc.
http://www.deneguesthouse.com/ Relatively inexpensive and good breakfasts. Its location is great for catching several bus routes. I've used it on two trips to Edinburgh. Cheers.
I've really enjoyed staying at the Inverleith Hotel near the Royal Botanic Gardens. I've also stayed recently at The Walton which is a B&B in New Town. Pam
Pat - I liked the Mingalar. The rates are reasonable and the breakfast is good. It's about 10-15 minute walk from Waverly station. The owner, Clive, is very knowledgable of the goings on in Edinburgh. www.mingalar.eu
hey Pam, how did you like the Walton? I've looked at staying there, but my dates didn't work. It's more than the Dene for a solo traveler, but sometimes you do just want an en-suite and forget the standard room .. though it is nice to stay 2 nights at one place for the cost of only one at the other (pro and con, con and pro). I did also stay once at the Walton's sister hotel, http://www.glenorahotel.co.uk/. Nice location for the AirLink and Haymarket station, though not quite as convenient for the usual sights.
When we were in Edinburgh in 2005, we stayed at Stuart House, 12 East Claremont Street. It's about a 15 – 20 minute walk to the Royal Mile, and is also on a bus route with a stop around the corner. In 2008, we stayed at Broughton Guest House, 37 Broughton Place (www.broughton-hotel.com). It's a couple of minutes closer to the Royal Mile, there is a nice neighborhood pub one block away, and across the street from the pub is an excellent restaurant called the Olive Branch. You actually pass this B&B on the way to Stuart House.
Both places were nice, the breakfasts were very tasty, and the owners were accommodating.
Thanks. This is all great info. Any little treasures you found in Edinburgh that were not listed in any guide books?
I chose The Walton as I wanted walking distance from Waverley and it meets that criteria. The room was nice, a single. I was headed out on an early flight so didn't get to try breakfast, but they gave me a nice "bag breakfast" to take with me. I would certainly go back again. Pam
Pat, I just got back Friday, 4/22 and stayed at Dorstan House, at 7 Priestfield Road. Nothing fancy, but very comfortable, the host, Richard was wonderful. He even let us use his computer to print out our boarding passes the night before we left. And he had scheduled our taxi for 4:30 the next morning. When the taxi didn't show, we had to ring the bell and he called and got us a taxi within a few minutes and stayed with us until it arrived. It was like staying with a relative. Have a great time. Pam
We stayed at 14 Hart Street in Edinburgh. We were driving, but it is a short walk to the royal mile. It is a neat place - great breakfast and a lot of character. A nice touch was they had wine and whiskey waiting on you every night. The owners are very trusting and give you the run of the place. It was one of the best places we have stayed. Look on Trip Advisor - it is number 4 out 0f 405 B&Bs. I did a lot of research for our trip and it paid off.
Thanks - Bill
We stayed last week at both the George and King James/Thistle hotels, both in New Town and within 5 minutes of Waverly Station. I would recommend either one of them. The George was a little more upscale and was great for our business conference (paid for by the company so I'm not sure how good of a value it was). After side-tripping to Inverness we stayed at the King James for a night. Considering how reasonable the rate was (although breakfast and wi-fi were not included), I was surprised how nice the hotel was. It had the best mattress and water pressure in the shower that we had on our trip.
Stayed at the Hotel George on George Street last October. I'd do it again. Ask for a room in the new/renovated section.
My daughter and I stayed at Elderfields Guest House last May and simply adored it. The hostess, Maureen, is so charming and helpful, and the place is decorated beautifully. The house itself was built around 1870, but the "facilities" are all up to date. Our bedroom looked out on Arthurs seat, and all we had to do was walk straight up the street, and we would be walking past Holyrood Palace in about 10 minutes, and be heading up the Royal Mile.
Price? 64 GBP per night, which also included breakfast. Prices may have changed this year though. http://www.guest-houses-edinburgh.com/index.php
