Well, it's not city centre, but we stayed in the Premier Inn out at Edinburgh Park. There's a train station across the road, and for GBP 5.60 you can both get round trip tickets that will take you right into the heart of Edinburgh. The Premier Inn has a nice bar, and a great breakfast.

We have stayed at the Royal British Hotel. It is across Princes St. from Waverly Train Station and only a short 5 min or so walk from the Royal Mile. Great location, excellent breakfast and very good bar. Reasonable rates. If you are going on to the Highlands, I recommend stopping in Aviemore. We LOVE the Caringorm Hotel. It is across the street from the train station. Looks like a miniture castle outside, hunting lodge inside. Restaurant serves THE BEST FOOD! Bar is also excellent.
In Inverness we have stayed at the Royal Highland Hotel. It is attached to the train station. Makes a good base- just a short 2-3- min. walk to center of town.

I've stayed at the Inverleith Hotel near the Royal Botanic Gardens. There is a bus stop a minute away that will take you up to Prince's Street or The Royal Mile in about 15 minutes max. You can buy an all day ticket for around 3 Pounds (I think). There is a nice small residence bar in the hotel and there is a pub just down the street. Alternatively, but without the bar, there The Walton in New Town. Hardly any walk to Prince's Street, but you need to take the same bus to to The Royal Mile. Husband needs to understand that there will be walking. ; ) Pam

Sherri, What time of year will you be there? If you'll be travelling in August during the Edinburgh Festival / Fringe and Military Tattoo, room prices increase sharply! If you want something on or near the Royal Mile, prices WILL likely be "crazy expensive". If you don't mind a short Bus ride, you could stay slightly out of the city centre. I would highly recommend This Hotel near Dalkeith Road. The rooms are very comfortable, the owners are wonderful, they serve a great breakfast and they have a Bar. Happy travels!

Just booked a 3 bedroom apartment on the Royal Mile from "Edlets" Oct 21-24, 3 nights. There are 5 of us, and it averaged out at $40/person/night. Will have the advantage of being able to prepare some of our own meals, have access to laundry facilities, and will be a 5 minute walk to Waverly train station and bus station nearby, and easy walking distance to all tourist attractions on the Royal Mile and Princess Street. Edlets had numerous 1, and 2 bedroom apartments also available. 25% down and balance billed about 1-2 months out. Cheap 3* hotels were coming in at about $50/person, many with questionable ratings on TripAdvisor. The hotels with better ratings were being quoted at around $150/double room. We also booked a self cater apartment in Fort William for 4 nights prior to Edinburgh booking. We self catered in County Cork Ireland last year and loved it! Dan

Just came in from Scotland last night. Edinburgh - stayed for nearly one week
Recommend Kenvie Guest House. Reasonably priced, clean, comfy, basic rooms with full "scottish breakfast" included. Very short walk to bus stop that will drop you off at Royal Mile. 1.40 GBP each way for adult on bus. There are plenty of bars around Royal Mile. Do the Pubs, then go back to the B&B for the night. Note: If Deacon Brodie's Tavern is packed full of people - you can go to Mitre Bar half-way down Royal Mile near Bridge street. Both places are run by Nicholson's pub company - same menu/same prices - good food/relatively priced well/nice clean atmosphere. Because of the easy bus connection to Royal Mile, the B&Bs off Dalkeith road (i.e. Kenvie) don't involve any more walking than anywhere else. Maybe even less. Expect some walking on Royal Mile - no matter what.
