Edinburg hotels

I am finding that when I call rooms are sold out, but if I go on line they have rooms, but you have to pay everything up front. Is this standard? I tried it with the Macdonald and with Holiday Inn Express.

Richard, When are you planning to travel to Edinburgh? I can't imagine they'd be sold out at this time of the year. Are you planning to stay near the Royal Mile? I don't know what's "standard" for booking in Edinburgh, but as I recall I paid a deposit to book my room last September. I settled the remainder of the bill on check-out. Good luck!

I don't know in what area of town you wish to stay. When I went to Edinburgh I stayed at the Jurys Inn near the train station and I booked through Expedia, but you can also book directly on Jurys website. Usually you get a better rate when paying up front, but Expedia usually has a good cancellation policy. Also try www.booking.com; they offer very clear payment and cancellation options on a variety of hotels.

Richard, Are you booking for August during the Festival? If so, be aware that many hotels require a multi-night stay and do require a deposit that is close to full payment. Also, there are penalties for canceling. I've stayed at the Inverleith Hotel and most recently at theWalton B&B. Pam

When we traveled to the UK, including Edinburgh, two summers ago, we used hotels.com. We stayed at the Grassmarket hotel in Edinburgh - nice if you are only looking for a place to sleep at night and close to everything in Old Town and the Royal Mile. The reason we booked there was because they offered free cancellation within a few days of our booking. I know that several hotels listed on that site offer free cancellation within a few days of your stay and there were many options in the larger cities in the UK. I'm sure that many other travel sites offer free cancellation as well. I don't know when you plan to travel, but hopefully this helps. Good luck and happy travels!
