Eating vegetarian in Ireland

I don't have great expectations of finding much vegetarian cuisine in Ireland, based on a Google search of the topic. There are a few listings of places but generally, how hard is it to eat vegetarian both within and outside of touristy areas? Thanks for any advice.

Don't know about being in the countryside, however, in the cities there is always an Indian restaurant and in Dublin look for Wagamama's for Asian!

There's usually a vegetarian option on the pub menus and there are always plenty of side dishes of veg and potatoes that you can order. Tons of different veggie curries as well from the Indian and Chinese restaurants. Almost every small town or village has an Indian or Chinese takeaway.

My wife is a vegetarian and eats quite well.

Just a quick note : The Irish aren't used to making substitutions on the menus. They won't be rude about it but it just doesn't happen much so expect a blank look.

You can always tell which table the Americans are at by the amount of time it takes to order and the confusion on the server's face.

I've seen enough Indian restaurants in the cities that you can always fall back on these if you are at a loss. Compared to the Indian restaurants in Britain, however, I found the Indian food for Irish tastes surprisingly bland.

If you like vegetable soup, it's pretty much a given in almost any Irish restaurant or pub. Usually it's in a pureed form (mostly with cream), but varies and is quite good. Most mini-marts carry some kind of selection of fruit and veggies for self catering meals.

If you eat fish your set. Oh - and Guinness has always been considered a full meal. I'm pretty sure it's 100% veggie. ;)

I was pleasantly surprised by the thriving healthy food initiative in Ireland. Many places proudly promote their local and organic fare, and we found vegetarian options everywhere we went. However, if you are a strict vegan it may be a bit more of a challenge. There are organic eateries and they usually have more vegan options than the 1 or 2 dishes offered by traditional restaurants.

Also, Guinness is NOT acceptable to many vegans as they use a fish by-product in the brewing process.

Enjoy your journey!

I believe the poster was asking about vegetarian options, not necessarily vegan ones.
