Early flight out of Oslo and not sure where to stay

Hi everyone, My husband and I end our vacation in Norway in August. We fly out of Oslo at 7:55 in the morning on a Wednesday. I was thinking that we should stay near the airport but it's 30 miles outside of the city. We do want see some of Oslo. Rick Steves' guidebook talks about the train that goes between the city and the airport...have any of you stayed in Oslo, then taken the train and caught an early flight out?

You can stay in the city. High speed airport express trains run from Oslo Central station from early morning. The first train is at 4.45 from Central station, and from then there are trains every 20 minutes at 05, 25 and 45 minutes past the hour. The train gets you to the airport in 22 minutes. You can also catch the airport express train at Nationatheatret Station. The aiport express train's website is www.flytoget.no The train is the fastest and most and convenient option to the airport, but not the cheapest, a single ride is NOK 170, equivalent to US$ 31. A good idea is to stay in a hotel not to far from the train station.

Thanks so much! Is there a hotel that you recommend in the city? I like to do B&Bs in the country, but enjoy staying in a hotel when we are visiting a city. I know everything is super expensive, so deluxe is probably out of our price range. :-)

We stayed at the hotel next to the station (there is a shopping mall and hotel). Very nice, small, clean rooms with shower (no tub). Great for seeing the city, getting to and from airport. Unfortunately I can't remember the name right now.

What part of August will you be in Oslo? The central station will be closed for construction until August 8th.

Then it will be open on August 8th? Hmmm...we get to Oslo on Aug. 8th and fly out Aug. 10th. Just wondering if I should play it safe in case there are any construction delays...

I'd be tempted to store baggage at the bus station - coin metered lockers - and explore Oslo - catching the last bus or train to the airport and sleeping there. If the flight is nearly 8, you'll need to be in the airport before 6 goiving you a getting up time of about 4 or so...

We did exactly what you're doing, and we spent our last night at the Thon Hotel which is right next to the train station. The hotel was very nice, and I'd stay there again. I can't remember if we bought our tickets the day before or day of our departure, but we didn't have any problem buying tickets or finding the track. The Oslo airport is really modern and easy to navigate.
