Dublin/Wicklow in January

My friend and I are considering spending 3 days in Ireland in January (arriving in Dublin a Tuesday morning, flying out on Friday morning). Yes, I know it'll be rainy and the days short, but that's fine with me. We want to see Dublin and a sample of the Irish countryside -- the Wicklow Mountains seem to fit the bill. Should we stay in Dublin and take a bus to Wicklow for the day? Or do we need to rent a car? Is it better to stay in Dublin or Wicklow? Are reservations needed?

We were in Dublin between New Years Day and January 10 of this year(research at archives)and yes--you will have far fewer hours of daylight (really kind of amazing) and chilly. We stayed in Bray and rode the DART into Dublin each day. Seems like a bus to Wicklow is best bet. I find car rentals expensive and there is always the problem of parking. You certainly don't need a car in Dublin.
You should be able to get a good deal on a hotel at that time of the year, especially in Dublin. I would have a reservation, though. I love Dublin!
