Dublin to Shannon--Plane or Train?

I will be flying into Dublin next spring and would like to immediately go to Shannon. (Due to using an award ticket, I'm locked into flying into Dublin.) I'm assuming it would be quickest and easiest to fly but am unsure. Does anyone have any suggestions? Also, which airlines within Ireland have the best reputations? I seem to recall comments about Ryanair cancelling flights frequently.

After thinking about it a little more, it would probably be just as convenient for me to go to Galway from Dublin if the flight/train connections are easier.

Any ideas?

If you want to fly from Dublin to Galway check out regional airline Aer Arann, www.aerarann.com

There are also several trains daily from Dublin's Heuston Station to Galway.

Flight takes 45 minutes; train takes 2 1/2 hours.

There are frequent buses from Dublin to Galway. It only takes about 3 hours and is a lot cheaper. I can't imagine going through all the trouble at the Dublin airport just to fly to Galway.

Any particular reason you want to immediately stay in Shannon? It's not really a traveler hot spot...actually, it's quite dull. There are many better towns to stay in overnight if you wish to explore Western Ireland, including some close enough for you to easily get to Shannon Airport if you intend to fly elsewhere in Europe after your Ireland trip ends.

Unless you can find a flight that connects quickly with your Dublin arrival, a train or even Bus Eireann service would probably be just as fast, if not faster than a layover waiting for a connecting flight. Also, your luggage allowance (plus weight & size) on an international flight (even for carry on bags) is typically much more generous than what you'll find on a budget carrier like Ryanair where you may be slapped an extra fee for an oversized or overweight bag. You won't have to deal with that on a train or a bus.
