Dublin Public Transport

Hello gang!

My wife and are going to be in Dublin in about two weeks. We're staying in Ballsbridge. Can anyone share any tips about using DART and the bus system to get around Dublin? We plan on doing some walking but want to be ready to jump on the bus if we're tired.

The passes I found on the bus website said that the passes are for non-consecutive days. That stinks. Are smart cards and easier way to go?

Thanks!

I think that "non-consecutive days" for the Rambler Ticket means that it doesn't expire on the third day after you first use it like the Freedom Ticket does. If I'm right and the Rambler Ticket is good for any three days you choose, then you should be able to use it three days in a row if you wish to do so. The same should be true for the five-day Rambler Ticket.

If you are going to City Centre from Ballsbridge, there are three options:

  • Walking -- not too much of a walk, 30/40 mins
    or so

  • DART (train) -- depends on where you are in Ballsbridge, probably no more than 5 or 10 min walk to a station

  • Bus

Since you are in that part of town, consider catching the DART to Dún Laoghaire (opposite direction to City Centre) and have a look around. It is a pretty ride along the coast. Actually if you go two stops past Dún Laoghaire and get off at Glenageary, it is a nice walk back into Dún Laoghaire.

There is also an excellent light tram/rail system servicing Dublin called the Luas Line. If you Google Luas Dublin it will show you the route map

When we were in Dublin, we would walk to town, taking different routes each day to see the city and "smell the roses" so to speak. After walking, touristing and shopping about most of the day, we would take a bus back to our abode. Just ask what bus number comes by your abode before leaving. Also, most buses from anywhere wind up in the center of Dublin.
