Dublin on St Patrick's Day

I will be in Ireland for the first time, and Dublin specifically, on St Patricks Day. I was thinking of taking in the St. Patrick's parade. What else should I not miss? What should I avoid? The next day will also be in Dublin, then we are going west for the rest of our trip.

They say the parade is Dublin is full of Americans while the parade in NY is full of Irish.

I have attended in Dublin and will never do it again.

But that's just me....

Michael,
I am interested in your reasons for not going again. Too wild and crazy or just not worth the crowds?

Well, since you asked......

St. Patricks Day, whether in or out of Ireland, represents everything I dislike. First off, the excessive drinking. The one day that celebrates my ethnicity and it has to be the most famous (other than New Years) drinking day of the year!? The Irish have plenty to be proud of, a penchant for the drink isn't one of them.

Then there are the plastic Paddies who fly in for the day -- acting like a fool.

Traditionally St. P Day was a religious holiday in Ireland. Only in the past 20 years has it become the mess that it is elsewhere in the world.

That's just my take -- you could end up loving it.

I tend to share your sentiments on the drinking. Not my style either. I like to remember what I do on vacation.
I am hoping there is more to the parade than an Irish version of Mardi Gras.
