Family members are visiting Dublin in May. One member is disabled and uses wheel chair and walking sticks. We all want to experience the Pub Crawl and the music. How realistic is that for us to consider? We are also planning day tours by bus and train. Based on your experience of Dublin and transportation, would you comment on the logistics of our decision?
I am not a handicapped person so I'm no expert, but I've been to Dublin several times, and I can tell you that you definitely do see wheelchair-bound people in pubs. But I don't think I've ever seen a pub restroom that could accomodate a wheelchair.
Excellent information - thanks Tom
I have been to Dublin 3 times in past 6 years and I use an electric 3 wheeled scooter. Downtown Dublin is not to bad. MOST curbs have a cutout, but not all. Also, some buses are wheelchair usable, and some are not. Just sit at the stop and one will come. Might be the first one or the second, etc., but one will finally be there that can accommodate a wheelchair. Some pubs do have handicapped toilets, but not all of them. You might want to ask before settling down for a meal and a drink. Some have toilets on the same floor and some have toilets in the basement. I was there this past September with my father who occasionally needs a wheelchair. To add to the other comments, people in the pubs are very accommodating--even helping us get the wheelchair in and out, down and up short flights of steps. We had no problem getting him around Dublin (although my mom almost threw him out of the chair a few times in rough spots--I don't THINK it was intentional). Of course, he is able to negotiate short flights of steps as long as he has either a hand rail or assistance so getting the wheelchair up and down wasn't too bad since it would be empty. :-) We DID splurge a couple of times on taxis when we were in a time crunch.
Thanks John and Nancy - Your responses are encouraging.
