Landing in Dublin and spending first day\night (Sunday) in Drogheda. Since I didn't want to travel on northward, I thought we might travel on Monday toward Westport and continue the trip southward from there after an overnight stay. Any absolute must-see's between Drogheda and Westport, or should we just drive the 4 hours straight through to Westport? I've not had much luck locating anything super exciting by searching online. I appreciate any suggestions!
We stayed at the D hotel in Drogheda last April when we visited Trim Castle, New Grange, Monasterboice, and the Hill of Tara. Are those on your list? If you add about thirty miles to your drive across Ireland, you could stop at Clonmacanoise. Twenty miles past Westport is the gorgeous Delphi Valley.
Actually planning to visit St. Peter's for mass on Sunday, and then checking out the Drogheda area ending the day with a stay at Scholar Hotel. After that, the itenirary is somewhat open for the next 16 days (other than desired visits to Westport, Ring of Beara, Cork and Wicklow areas). Does that sound too ambitious? :-)
Not far from Drogheda: Trim Castle, Newgrange, Hill of Tara.
